What Causes Facial Spider Veins?

facial spider veins

Spider veins are like varicose veins except for the size. Both conditions are caused by enlarged blood vessels, with varicose veins being larger and more common on the legs than anywhere else. Spider veins, on the other hand, often appear on the face as well as the legs. Since they are smaller, they usually do not cause the symptoms that varicose veins can. The issue with spider veins is primarily cosmetic in nature. This, however, is enough of a reason for many people to look for ways to have them removed, especially when they are located on the face. Fortunately, your facial spider veins can be removed without the need for surgery or lengthy downtime.

It is not known why some people get spider veins when others with similar risk factors do not. There is substantial evidence that points to hereditary being one of the causes. If your parents had the condition, it is likely that you will too. The risk increases with age as well.

Facial spider veins can also be caused by hormonal changes that go along with pregnancy. If you are pregnant and start to develop them, there is a good chance that they may go away after childbirth.

Obesity is another risk factor for the development of facial spider veins. It can actually cause both spider veins and varicose veins to develop in the legs, more so than the face. This is due to the pressure that is put on the veins as a result of the additional weight.

If you have facial spider veins and want them removed, there are treatment methods that have been shown to be effective at making them disappear. These treatments are non-invasive or minimally-invasive in nature and typically do not involve much discomfort or downtime. During a consultation at our office in Fort Myers, you can learn more about our treatment options and which one is likely to give you the best results.

If you have facial spider veins or you feel like you have one or more risk factors that could lead to their development, you should consult with our experts at Cardiology Consultants of Southwest Florida and The Vein Center.
