What Does Coronary Stenting Involve?

coronary stent

A coronary stent is a treatment for coronary heart disease. It is placed inside a coronary artery when the artery is narrowed by the buildup of plaque inside the artery.

The stent is an expandable metal mesh tube that is placed in the artery through a small opening in a blood vessel. We may use different methods to find the narrow part of the artery and complete the process.

The heart muscle requires a good blood supply and the coronary arteries take blood to the heart muscle. The aorta artery is the large artery that takes blood from the left ventricle of the heart to the rest of the body. It is called angina when one or more of the coronary arteries becomes narrow.

Coronary stenting is considered minimally invasive because it does not require any major incisions. Our specialists may give a mild sedative and local anesthesia.

Check with us to see how we will tailor a treatment. Procedure time may vary. If more than one stent is required, it could take longer.

People who have stenting often experience an almost immediate reduction in chest pain and a much shorter recovery time than people who have coronary artery bypass surgery.

A stent may be made of pleated fabric and may have one or more tiny hooks. The stent is also placed in the artery wall where it is expanded. The hooks latch on to the artery wall and hold the stent in place. A new inner lining is created in the artery by the stent.

Schedule a Consultation

A person with coronary or aortic blockage may benefit from a stent being placed in the artery to expand the narrow artery allowing blood to freely pass through. Our specialist will discuss your medical issues and, after an examination, be able to confirm if a stent may help your heart problems.

To schedule your consultation, contact Cardiology Consultants of Southwest Florida today. We offer a variety of services including sclerotherapy, electrocardiograms, stress testing, cholesterol management, and more.

Our office is located in the Fort Myers, FL area. We look forward to speaking with you.
