Varicose veins are not an indication of a serious medical condition. However, they are unsightly and can cause the individual to become overly self-conscious about his or her appearance. These problem veins can be removed by a non-invasive procedure known as a phlebectomy. So long as the vein is near the skin, it can be surgically removed.
When we consult with our clients to discuss varicose veins, we outline the various treatment methods. A phlebectomy is often the recommended procedure if the feeder vein is close to the skin and does not have a large number of branching capillaries.
Treating Varicose Veins
Veins are full of valves, and the valves help prevent blood from flowing backward. Blood pressure in the veins is lower than in the arteries. If vein walls become weakened, the pressure drops even more. Sometimes the blood tries to flow backwards, and the body responds by pushing the blood out through small capillaries. This can cause the vein to become more pronounced.
As we age, our veins lose some of their elasticity. This causes them to stretch or expand. Sometimes this expansion causes the vein to push nearer to the surface.
We examine our clients’ varicose veins closely before making a recommendation. In some cases, we perform a physical exam. This allows us to check the overall strength of the veins in the leg where the varicose vein is located.
How the Surgery Is Performed
A phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure that requires no overnight stay. A small point of entry is made in the patient’s skin. Special instruments are used to lift and cut away the varicose vein. Normally, this procedure takes less than one hour.
A compression wrap is usually placed on the affected leg. This helps to increase the blood flow among other things. Several different compression stockings, each less tight than the previous one, are worn usually for the next two weeks or so.
What About Medications?
Some pain killers and blood thinners may have to be avoided prior to the surgery. Depending on the size of the vein removed and the amount of nerves affected by the procedure, we may prescribe a special medication to be used for a few days after the treatment is completed.
