What are the Carotid Arteries?

The body contains two carotid arteries that run on each side of the neck and up to the brain. Each carotid artery divides into an internal and external artery – the internal carotid arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain, whereas the external carotid arteries deliver oxygen-rich blood to the face, scalp, and neck. The carotid arteries are essential in maintaining brain function.

What is the Aorta?

The left common carotid artery branches off from the aorta, the main artery of the body that supplies oxygenated blood to the circulatory system. While the carotid arteries are responsible for delivering blood to the brain and face, the aorta plays a key role in the blood reaching the rest of the blood.

What is Carotid and Aortic Ultrasound Testing?

Over time, the carotid arteries can develop Carotid Artery Disease – the buildup of a waxy substance called plaque. The hardening of this plaque can restrict blood flow to the brain. When the plaque ruptures and begins to break, blood clots can form on the surface, which can also be detrimental to blood flow. Pieces of the clot or plaque can also break off and cause a blockage, potentially causing a stroke.

Carotid ultrasound testing is an easy, comfortable process that uses high-energy sound waves and creates high-resolution images of the insides of your carotid arteries, allowing our medical team to check and monitor any signs of Carotid Artery Disease.

At Cardiology Consultants of Southwest Florida, our advanced ultrasound testing can also show us the movement of blood through the arteries, including the aorta. Ensuring the proper flow and movement of blood through your body can help maintain your overall health and wellness for the long term as well as catch any signs of cardiovascular disease early on. If issues with the arteries or vessels are discovered, we will create a treatment plan for you to address these issues and maintain your cardiovascular health.

Contact Cardiology Consultants of Southwest Florida today to schedule a consultation and find out how you can benefit from safe, painless carotid and aortic ultrasound testing.
